Ukraine Peace Negotiations
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Moscow this week to present a peace proposal to Vladimir Putin as part of President Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine.[1] A Ukrainian delegation is meeting in Florida with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jared Kushner, and Witkoff to hammer out an agreed position before the Moscow trip.[1] While Ukrainian officials say the draft peace plan is more acceptable now, significant obstacles remain unresolved, particularly regarding whether Ukraine will surrender territory and what security guarantees will be provided.[1] European Union top diplomat Kaja Kallas has expressed concern about US efforts to push Ukraine into a lopsided peace deal.[3] Putin has already signaled he won’t compromise, demanding that Ukraine withdraw from territory he claims and stating it’s pointless to negotiate with President Zelenskiy.[1]
Russia continues military operations in Ukraine, with a Russian Iskander missile strike on Dnipro killing four people and injuring at least 40 others.[2] Moscow also claims its forces have captured Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast after months of heavy fighting.[2] Air attacks near Kyiv have intensified, with at least one person killed and nearly 20 injured in recent strikes.[1]
Venezuela Tensions
President Trump is escalating pressure on Venezuela, warning all airlines, pilots, drug dealers, and human traffickers to consider Venezuelan airspace closed.[1] This follows an FAA warning about hazardous conditions in Venezuelan skies, prompting six international carriers to suspend flights to Caracas.[1] The Trump administration has deployed the USS Gerald Ford, the world’s largest and most lethal aircraft carrier, to the Caribbean as a show of force against President Nicolás Maduro.[1] Additionally, Trump’s administration has formally added Venezuela’s leadership to the State Department’s list of the world’s most dangerous terrorist organizations.[1]
Other Global Events
A deadly mass shooting occurred in California, with at least four people killed and 10 wounded during a family celebration.[1] In Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces claim they have captured Babanusa, the last stronghold of the Sudanese Armed Forces in West Kordofan.[2] Haiti is experiencing gang violence, with gangs launching large-scale attacks on the Ouest and Artibonite departments, now controlling 50% of the Artibonite region.[2] A Hong Kong court fire investigation has resulted in 13 arrests on suspicion of manslaughter, with officials reporting that some scaffolding netting failed to meet fire-resistance standards.[2] Oxford University Press named “ragebait” as the word of the year.[2]
Weather
Over 75 million Americans are facing heavy snow, ice, and rain as a potential Nor’easter approaches, with travelers continuing to deal with flight delays and cancellations.[4]
