Missile Strikes, Border Reinforcements, and Drone Attacks Escalate Global Tensions

Armed Conflicts and Attacks

Ukraine and Russia
Four people were killed and at least 40 others injured in a Russian Iskander missile strike on Dnipro, Ukraine.[1] Russia claimed its forces captured Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast following months of heavy fighting.[1]

Sudan
The Rapid Support Forces announced they captured Babanusa, described as the last stronghold of the Sudanese Armed Forces in West Kordofan, Sudan.[1]

Haiti
Haitian gangs launched a large-scale attack on the Ouest and Artibonite departments, forcing hundreds of people to flee. Police reported that gangs now control approximately 50% of the Artibonite region, including the town of Pont-Sondé.[1]

Afghanistan and Tajikistan
Tajikistan ordered reinforcements at its border with Afghanistan after claiming that Afghan drone strikes killed two Tajik and three Chinese citizens over the past week.[1]

Pentagon War Crimes Investigation
The Pentagon faced accusations of war crimes following a second strike on a boat carrying suspected drug traffickers off the coast of Venezuela. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorized two strikes, with the second reportedly targeting survivors of the initial strike.[2] Lawmakers from both parties questioned the second strike, while President Trump stated he was unaware of it and would not have authorized it.[2]

International Developments

Peace Negotiations
U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff was scheduled to meet with Vladimir Putin in Moscow to present a peace plan regarding Ukraine. However, sources indicated that Russia was refusing to agree to a ceasefire unless Ukraine cedes territory.[2]

Venezuela
President Trump was scheduled to hold an Oval Office meeting on Venezuela.[4]

Political Transitions
Nigeria granted asylum to Guinea-Bissau opposition leader Fernando Dias da Costa at its embassy in Bissau to protect him from detention by the military junta.[1] Additionally, Canada agreed to join the European Union’s Security Action for Europe initiative, which will expand Canadian defense firms’ access to EU markets and encourage European defense investment in Canada.[1]

Weather and Travel

More than 75 million Americans were on alert for a potential Nor’easter bringing heavy snow, ice, and rain.[2] Travelers faced ongoing flight delays and thousands of cancellations from previous weather impacts.[2]

Culture and Awards

“Ragebait” was named word of the year by Oxford University Press.[1]
