Spain Trip 2022: Top Things To Do In Madrid Over A Weekend – Swirlster

The political and cultural centre of Spain – Madrid – makes a grand first impression. A walk around its elegant boulevards, and you will find yourself admiring the beautifully-preserved medieval buildings at every nook and corner. The heart of Madrid is no doubt bustling with tourists, yet that’s where you will want to be – from Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol to making your way to Gran Via. Don’t be surprised if you are drawn to endless bar de tapas or tabernas to indulge in local delights of Croquetas de jamon (ham croquettes), Gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp), Chorizo al vino (sausage in red wine) and pitchers of sangrias. That’s just the start; you are yet to explore lavish palaces, cathedrals, flawlessly manicured parks, a host of art museums called the Golden Triangle of Art, charming neighbourhoods, michelin-starred restaurants, pub crawls, a lesson of flamenco perhaps… the list goes on!

Best Things To Do In Madrid In 2022

Don’t know where to start? We are here to make it simple and easy by listing down the top things to do in Madrid over a weekend or a 2-night’s stay:

1. Start With Plaza Mayor

A great way to start is to be in the middle of it all. Make your way to the hub of old Madrid – Plaza Mayor, which is a 17th century landmark that was once the venue for ceremonial events as well as bull fights and executions. The three-storey buildings enclose a square with a statue of King Philip III standing tall at the centre (it was during his reign Plaza Mayor was built). Endless restaurants dot the area and make for a good spot to experience the place at leisure while sipping some wine. Before you leave, make a pitstop at a no-frill tavern called La Campana that serves a perfect on-the-go treat – Bocadillos de Calamares (calamari sandwich). Or for those with a sweet tooth, Chocolateria San Ginés is where you can grab the best churros.

An Upset Customer Tweeted at Delta Air Lines. Its Response Was the 1 Thing No Company …

Delta Air Lines had a rough start to the Memorial Day weekend. On Saturday, the airline canceled 254 flights and delayed another 530. Delta Air Lines wasn’t the only airline canceling flights, but it was among the hardest hit.

If you were one of the people who thought they were going to show up at the airport, get on a plane, and spend the weekend barbecuing with family–only to find out your flight was canceled and now you have to wait to be rebooked–you’d be pretty frustrated.

The problem for any company that serves so many people at scale, is that when you cancel that many flights, you’re going to end up with a far greater number of people than usual calling with problems.

Some of them are going to be pretty mad. Some of those people might tweet about it. When they do, they might even say mean things. That’s where things can get complicated.

For example, this Twitter exchange went viral over the weekend. It appears that the original post came from a customer who found out on Friday evening that their Saturday morning flight had been canceled.

That’s frustrating. As someone who flies pretty regularly, I can empathize. No one likes to have their plans ruined, [...]  read more

Video shows Russian solider giving middle finger to Ukrainian drone before being blown up

Shocking, new footage shows a Russian soldier flipping off a Ukrainian drone before being blown up by enemy munitions.

In a 90-second clip posted Sunday, a drone zooms in on a group of Russian troops standing around a vehicle. About 17 seconds into the footage, one of the six Russian soldiers turns his head up to the sky, and directs a one-finger salute to the drone.

As the camera pans out, the drone releases a grenade onto the BTR-82A, a 8×8 wheeled armored personnel carrier, causing it to burst into flames.

It’s unclear when and where exactly the footage was taken, though the Ukraine Weapons Tracker Twitter account said it took place in eastern Ukraine, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday is “indescribably difficult” to protect.

The footage was shared a day after Russia reached a grim milestone of losing 30,000 soldiers in its war with Ukraine the country launched in late February.

Warren police say “large sums” of money found during gambling raid of bar – Macomb Daily

Six people were arrested and thousands of dollars seized late Friday during a raid of a Warren bar where police executed a gambling raid, authorities confirmed Sunday.

The enforcement action was taken at Club Babylon on Ryan near Chicago roads. Property tax records show 71-year-old Samona Amir of Wolverine Lake is the registered agent of bar-restaurant.

“We executed a search warrant at the club where there was reportedly excessive gambling going on with poker machines, cash ledgers, gambling markers, large sums of money and other gambling paraphernalia,” said police Commissioner William Dwyer.

Investigators described the setup as a “family operation” that a total of $33,000 confiscated.

The suspects who taken into custody included four males in their 50s and two females, ages 43 and 57. They were apprehended by Warren’s patrol division and Special Investigations Division.

The suspects were released pending a meeting Tuesday between police and the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office [...]  read more

First Thing: Biden visits Uvalde after mass shooting

President and first lady seek to comfort community as DoJ launches investigation into the police’s response. Plus, how the side hustle ate the hobby

Good morning.

Joe Biden has visited Uvalde, Texas, seeking to comfort a community devastated by the latest American mass shooting, which claimed the lives of 19 elementary school children and two teachers.

The visit yesterday marked the second presidential visit related to a massacre within two weeks after a racist attack in Buffalo, New York, as Democrats in Washington offered tentative hope of bipartisan gun reform legislation in Congress.

Onlookers cheered Biden but also called out to the Democratic president and the visiting Texas Republican governor Greg Abbott about taking action to make America safer for their children.

Joe and Jill Biden, both wearing black, paid their respects at a makeshift memorial site outside the Robb elementary school in Uvalde, laying a bouquet of white flowers amid a mass of candles, flowers, and photographs of the victims.

Will any gun control measures be brought in? Senators in Washington DC offered cautious optimism over a legislative deal on a package of small-scale gun safety measures. Meanwhile, Democrats in some blue states are making efforts to reinvigorate gun control proposals.

What else is happening? The US government yesterday announced a federal investigation into the police response as anger [...]  read more
