U.S. and Israel Strike Iran, Major Escalation in Middle East Tensions

Major Escalation in Iran–United States Crisis

Israel and the United States launched preemptive strikes on Iran, targeting missile facilities, naval assets, and the supreme leader’s office in Tehran, with satellite imagery confirming destruction of Ali Khamenei’s compound.[1] President Donald Trump announced a “major U.S. combat operation,” calling for the Iranian military to overthrow Khamenei, while explosions from U.S. Tomahawk missiles were reported in Tehran.[1] Iran’s defense minister Aziz Nasirzadeh and IRGC commander Mohammad Pakpour were reportedly killed in Israeli strikes.[1]

Iran retaliated with ballistic missiles on U.S. Navy facilities in Bahrain, and strikes on Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE (killing one in Abu Dhabi), and Dubai (hitting a Palm Islands hotel, injuring four, and prompting Burj Khalifa evacuation).[1] Iranian drones hit Kuwait International Airport (minor injuries, terminal damage) and residential areas in Manama, Bahrain.[1] Airspaces closed in Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, and partially in UAE; Dubai flights suspended indefinitely.[1] Yemen’s Houthis resumed Red Sea and Israel attacks in support.[1] Israel declared a state of emergency.[1] An airstrike killed at least two at Popular Mobilization Forces headquarters in Iraq.[1]

Pakistan-Afghanistan Conflict

Pakistan declared war on Afghanistan, launching airstrikes on Kabul and other cities after border clashes with Taliban forces.[2] Tensions rose over militant groups, failed ceasefires, and accusations of Indian influence; UN warns of humanitarian disaster, with Saudi mediation attempts.[2]

Europe-Ukraine-Russia Developments

Hungary blocks EU’s 20th Russia sanctions package and €90 billion Ukraine loan, demanding restored gas flows via damaged pipeline.[2] French President Emmanuel Macron to update nuclear doctrine amid concerns over U.S. reliability against Russian threats.[2]
