Iran Crisis Escalates: U.S. Strikes, Retaliatory Missiles, Middle East Tensions Soar

Israel and the United States have launched strikes on Iran, escalating the 2026 Iran–United States crisis, with President Donald Trump announcing a major U.S. combat operation targeting Iranian missile facilities and naval assets. Explosions are reported in Tehran from U.S. Tomahawk missiles, while Iran has retaliated by launching ballistic missiles at a U.S. Navy facility in Bahrain, and additional missiles at Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.[1] U.S. embassies in Bahrain and Qatar have ordered personnel to shelter in place amid ongoing threats, with a recent security alert from the U.S. Embassy in Doha warning of imminent missile strikes and urging people to duck and cover.[3]

Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, and Qatar have closed their airspace to civilian flights, with the UAE partially closing its, as a state of emergency is declared in Israel. Yemen’s Houthis have announced they will resume attacks on Red Sea shipping and Israel in support of Iran; separately, an airstrike killed at least two and injured five at Popular Mobilization Forces headquarters in Jurf al-Nasr, Iraq.[1]

Pakistan has declared war on Afghanistan, conducting airstrikes on Kabul and other cities following border clashes with the Taliban. The conflict, amid failed ceasefires and accusations of terrorism support, has caused dozens of deaths and a migrant crisis, with Saudi Arabia mediating and the UN warning of a humanitarian disaster.[2]

Other developments include U.S. military buildup in the Middle East, with the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier arriving and Secretary of State Marco Rubio planning a visit to Israel; multiple countries have urged citizens to evacuate Israel and avoid Iran. France’s President is set to update its nuclear doctrine amid European concerns over Russia, while Hungary blocks EU sanctions on Russia and a 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine over pipeline issues.[2]
