Netflix is at it again, folks, and this time they’ve got our favorite Boston boys, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, in tow. The duo is back on the screen together in the new action thriller, The Rip, directed by the seasoned and talented Joe Carnahan. The film, set to release on January 16th, also features Steven Yeun and Teyana Taylor, amping up the star power and adding a much needed dash of diversity to the mix.
The Rip is set in the sun-soaked city of Miami, where a team of cops stumbles upon a cache of illicit cash in a dilapidated stash house. Suddenly, it’s a high-stakes game of Who Do You Trust? Or, as I like to put it, Who’s Really Not That Good at Acting? Despite its lack of originality in the plotline, the film promises to deliver suspense, betrayal, and a whole lot of gunfire.
The trailer itself is an adrenaline-charged spectacle filled with explosive scenes, dramatic dialogues, and a whole lot of machismo. It’s the classic high-octane caper flick, with the promise of some intense action sequences and gritty shootouts. But let’s face it, we’ve seen this story before, haven’t we? The unoriginal plotline is as fresh as a remake, with friends turning against friends and trust issues galore.
But let’s not be too quick to judge. After all, it’s got Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in the lead roles. Damon delivers his classic ‘I’m a tough cop with a heart of gold’ performance, while Affleck seems to revel in playing the ‘loose cannon’ cop. Yeun and Taylor do their part as well, and their performances add an element of unexpected depth to the otherwise cliched narrative.
The dialogues of The Rip often feel like a throwback to 90s action cinema, with the witty one-liners and the macho banter. It’s not groundbreaking cinema, but let’s be realistic, not every movie needs to be. Sometimes, you just want to watch a well-made action movie that doesn’t require too much intellectual effort. And The Rip delivers that in spades.
As for the direction, Carnahan uses his experience in the genre to keep the pace brisk and the tension high. The chase scenes are well choreographed, and the shootouts are gritty and well-executed. The screenplay, however, is where The Rip could have used a bit more creativity. It sticks to the tried and tested formula of the genre, and while it does it well, it doesn’t offer anything new to the audience.
So, what’s the final verdict? If you’re looking for a cinematic masterpiece that will make you contemplate the meaning of life, The Rip might not be your cup of tea. But if you’re in the mood for a fast-paced, bullet-ridden, trust-no-one kind of movie, then you’re in for a treat.
Netflix has given us another action flick that we didn’t ask for, but will probably watch anyway because, let’s face it, who can resist watching Damon and Affleck shooting bad guys in Miami while spouting witty one-liners? So, grab some popcorn, kick back, and enjoy the ride. The Rip might not be the most original film out there, but it sure is a lot of fun. And sometimes, that’s all you really need.
