Brazil Wins First FIFA Women's Futsal World Cup; Israel Reopens Border During Middle East Unrest

Major Global Events

Sports Achievement – Brazil won the inaugural FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup, defeating Portugal 3–0 in the final held in Metro Manila, Philippines, with Emilly earning the Golden Ball award.[1]

Middle East and Conflicts – Israel announced it will reopen the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, allowing Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip.[1] However, five Palestinians, including two children, were killed by Israeli drone strikes near Khan Younis, and the Israeli army reported four soldiers wounded in a Hamas attack in Rafah.[1] Additionally, Israel carried out a wave of airstrikes in southern Lebanon, allegedly targeting Hezbollah sites.[1]

Sudan Crisis – The Rapid Support Forces captured Heglig, Sudan’s largest oilfield, after the Sudanese Armed Forces withdrew from the area.[1] In a separate incident, 50 people, including 33 children, were killed after the Rapid Support Forces struck a kindergarten in South Kordofan.[1] The RSF also claimed to have captured Babanusa, described as the last stronghold of the Sudanese Armed Forces in West Kordofan.[1]

Africa and Regional Developments – Presidents Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Paul Kagame of Rwanda formally signed a peace agreement in Washington, D.C., hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump.[1] Nigeria granted asylum to Guinea-Bissau opposition leader Fernando Dias da Costa at its embassy in Bissau to protect him from detention by the military junta.[1] Colombian authorities and the Clan del Golfo agreed that the group’s combatants will begin assembling in designated zones starting March 1, with arrest and extradition orders suspended during the process.[1]

Security Incidents – At least five people were killed and 12 injured in a suspected car bombing outside a police station in Coahuayana, Michoacán, Mexico.[1] In Ecuador, 13 suspected Los Lobos gang members were killed in a prison riot following two explosions in Machala.[1] Nigerian authorities secured the release of 100 of 315 students and staff abducted from a school in Niger State, with more than 160 still unaccounted for.[1] Five civilians were killed and eight injured in a shootout between Pakistani and Afghan soldiers at the border.[1]

Humanitarian Crisis – Haitian gangs launched large-scale attacks on the Ouest and Artibonite departments, causing hundreds of people to flee, with police reporting that gangs now control 50% of Artibonite, including the town of Pont-Sondé.[1]

International Relations – Canada agreed to join the European Union’s Security Action for Europe initiative, which will allow Canadian defense firms greater access to EU markets and encourage European defense investment in Canada.[1] Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández was released from prison in West Virginia after U.S. President Donald Trump pardoned him from his conviction of aiding large-scale cocaine trafficking.[1] Thailand extradited Vietnamese citizen Y Quynh Bđăp, who founded a human rights organization for ethnic minorities, amid concerns from human rights groups.[1]

Other Developments – Australia has begun enforcing a world-first law banning children under 16 from many of the biggest social media platforms.[2] A court in Beijing ordered Malaysia Airlines to pay 2.9 million yuan (US$410,000) each to families of eight missing passengers from Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which disappeared in 2014.[1] A court in Spain provisionally closed its investigation into the killing of Russian defector Maxim Kuzminov after authorities could not identify any perpetrators.[1]
