Border Tensions Flare: Thailand and Cambodia Clash, Thousands Displaced

Thailand-Cambodia Border Escalation

Fighting has erupted again between Thailand and Cambodia after the Royal Thai Air Force launched airstrikes Monday along their disputed border.[1][3] The renewed violence has killed seven civilians and wounded 20 more, with three Thai soldiers also killed and 29 injured during clashes with Cambodian forces.[3] Tens of thousands have been displaced from border areas as both nations accuse each other of breaching a ceasefire deal brokered by President Trump in October.[1][2] Cambodia’s Defense Ministry spokesperson stated that Thailand’s actions demonstrate “their intention to grab their neighbors land using a unilateral map and using force to change borders.”[1]

Ukraine-Russia Conflict and European Diplomacy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues rallying European support while reaffirming his refusal to cede territory to Russia, resisting U.S. pressure for compromise.[2] Zelenskyy has held meetings with Pope Francis and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, with the Pope calling for a “just and lasting” peace in Ukraine.[2] The Ukrainian president has called for “collective pressure” on Russia amid fresh strikes on Ukrainian territory.[2]

U.S. and European Security Policy

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the Trump administration’s new national security strategy underscores the need for Europe to become “much more independent” from the United States in terms of security policy.[2]

Middle East and International Law

Israel’s military has killed more journalists in 2025 than any other country for the third consecutive year, with 29 Palestinian journalists among 67 journalists killed globally, according to Reporters Without Borders.[1] The United Nations has condemned a raid by Israeli forces on the headquarters of UNRA in occupied East Jerusalem, with a UN spokesperson stating the raid directly violates international law.[1]

U.S. Domestic and International Actions

President Trump has announced a $12 billion aid package to farmers struggling from the effects of his tariffs.[1] The Supreme Court has signaled it is prepared to make it easier for Trump to fire independent federal agency commissioners.[1] Trump has pardoned approximately 100 people accused of drug-related crimes, including former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, prompting Honduras to seek his arrest through Interpol.[1][2]

Natural Disasters and Other Incidents

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck 50 miles off the coast of Japan near Aomori, triggering tsunami warnings that have since been downgraded to advisories.[2] A fire in an office building in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta has killed at least 22 people.[2] The International Criminal Court has sentenced a Sudanese militia leader to 20 years in prison for Darfur atrocities committed in 2003-2004.[2] Czech populist billionaire Andrej Babiš has been sworn in as the Czech Republic’s new prime minister.[2]
