In a recent appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Tallulah Willis opened up about her father, Bruce Willis, and his journey with a severe form of dementia.
“He remains unchanged, which I’ve come to realize is the most comforting outcome one could hope for in such situations,” she remarked on Wednesday’s show.
“When I’m with him, I feel love. It’s my father, and his love for me is truly a blessing.”
As previously disclosed, Bruce Willis received a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia in February.
“The clarity of this diagnosis, despite its difficulty, is a form of solace,” the family expressed in a statement on the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration’s website.
“FTD is a devastating condition that remains obscure to many. It is the predominant form of dementia in individuals under 60, and due to the lengthy diagnosis process, its prevalence is likely higher than assumed.”
This diagnosis followed an announcement nearly a year prior that Bruce was withdrawing from his acting career due to aphasia, which affects cognitive language abilities and communication.
The Willis family, including Bruce’s five daughters, his current wife Emma Heming, and his former wife Demi Moore, have been transparent about the actor’s health issues.
Tallulah, 29, explained to Barrymore that their openness serves a dual purpose: it’s a reflection of their family’s nature and a crucial step in raising awareness about FTD.
“If our family’s challenge can aid others and transform our struggle into something positive, that’s incredibly meaningful to us,” she added.
In a “Today” show interview in September, Heming shared the difficulty in discerning Bruce’s awareness of his dementia.
“Dementia is challenging,” she confided to Hoda Kotb. “It’s taxing for the diagnosed individual and their family alike. This is true for Bruce, myself, and our daughters. It’s rightly said to be a family affliction.”
In her efforts to raise awareness about this rare dementia form, Heming, 45, has been candid on social media about her husband and their family’s experiences.
“I may seem to be enjoying life, but I consciously strive every day to live well. I do this for myself, our children, and Bruce, who would expect nothing less,” she revealed in an Instagram post in August.
She emphasized the importance of self-care, stating, “When we neglect our own well-being, we can’t take care of the ones we love.”
